[12 Days of Anime] Day 1: Live and Let Live with DIY

The 14th of December marks the beginning of the 12 Days of Anime, an event I’ve had a smattering of experience with over the years, sometimes participating, sometimes completely forgetting about it, and even more commonly losing steam part way through. Hopefully this year will be an example of the first, though I’ll likely keep the posts a bit short to accommodate my procrastinating nature.

Fall anime Do It Yourself!! leads with Day 1 and its live and let live lesson featured prominently in episode nine, “Does ‘DIY’ Mean a Shocking Surprise? How Unexpected! It’s Really Unexpected!” This is when Serufu invites the club to her home to demonstrate her improved skills by building a pig house. Her continued struggles reveal her insecurity that results in her friends banding together to remind her of her worth.

The club’s confrontations and Serufu’s realization of her own skills and how they work with everyone else seems like a simple and obvious lesson, but that’s exactly why it’s so impactful. While she’s clumsy and often over ambitious, her vision is so far outside of expectations that it fuels everyone else’s motivations. There’s no need for her to force herself to be something she isn’t, or to ignore her worthwhile contributions. If anything, Serufu deserves praise for her creativity and positivity.

Jobko’s encouragement to “live and let live” resonated with me particularly strongly with these past few years under consideration. Even before the pandemic, I’ve floundered for purpose and motivation, but the forced quarantining during COVID multiplied those feelings of inadequacy and illegitimacy. I’m still not out of that swamp of emotions and focus, but there’s a bit of a silver lining giving me hope for the future.

Do It Yourself!! might seem like a bit of an addition to something as lofty as 12 notable moments from the past year, but the show really does feel like an extension of Serufu’s character. The show isn’t flashy nor ambitious, but it excels in its characters and pacing. There aren’t any crazy conflicts or drama. Their goals are modest and achievable. Each episode is a breath of fresh air in the week as their progress moves steadily towards the club treehouse. Cute girls doing strangely cute things has never looked so good.

  1. 12 days already started Marina, damn! I’ll be skipping the challenge. I’ll be keeping an eye out on your posts though. As an old timer in the blogging sphere, just looking at the peeps taking part, I guess not many are doing it. I used to remember it being a big thing, now life in general or just focusing on their own blogs has diminished it greatly. Might give Do it Yourself a shot, looks interesting.

    • I know, right? Time is FLYING and I can’t believe we’re already halfway through December D: 2023 is just around the corner! And yeah, I really haven’t seen many bloggers participating this year, but I have noticed some anitubers posting.
Do give DIY a try 🙂
