Anime History
A friend popped Spirited Away into the player and I was stunned by the imagination. Miyazaki’s film was my introduction to the world of anime and everything that followed: manga, Asian dramas, studying the Japanese language, and planning multiple trips to Japan. Azumanga Daioh was the first anime series I ever watched, and it remains to this day one of my favorites of all time. This was several years ago in college. Since then, I’ve moved on to many different genres that have both enlightened and blown to gigantic proportions my ideas of animated art and plot.
Some of what helped this addiction was my participation in the AnimeSuki forum, of which I’ve been a member since 2007. It was only until then that I realized just how large that particular world was. My later cooperation in the promotion of the still-young International Saimoe League in 2008 prompted further investigation; I felt the need to familiarize myself with the shows of all the anime girls involved in the year-round competition. This forced me to watch shows I would never have considered, much less watched, and brought me treasures like Cardcaptor Sakura, Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha, and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.
I now strive hard to both keep up with the currently airing anime, as well as forage into the past and pull out gems that I breezed over or that aired before my time. If you’re so inclined, I’d love it if you joined myself and Draggle of Draggle’s Anime Blog on our bi-weekly podcast, Kaiseki Anime Podcast, where we discuss seasonal anime!
In Real Life (Updated May 2018)
I moved to the Emerald City five years ago, and was lucky enough to immediately land a full-time desk job that I found reasonably enjoyable. A little under a year of living here, I met my husband! I am now blogging and writing from home and have dreams of publishing the next great fantasy children’s series. That, and a handful of memoirs on my mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law. Time will tell how successful I will be. Please read my New Directions in 2017 for a bit more detail on my literary inspirations.

Well, congrats on starting up your anime blog and I hope it goes well for you. I’ll make sure to check up on you now and then to see how you’re doing! You should consider getting your blog up on AnimeNano, a site that catalogs anime/manga/Japanese culture/etc. blogs and places all the posts on a feed for easier overall viewing. I know it’s helped me get a lot of readers.
In regards to the link exchange: sure, I don’t mind. I found your latest post on Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica interesting 🙂

Hey Marina!
I was wondering if you would be up to exchange links. I started a website about the opening and ending theme songs of different Anime. I’m trying to make it a one stop shop for people (no heavy advertising no donate here crap.) let me know what you think.

Huh, a site based solely around OP and ED–that’s an interesting idea. I checked the link out, though I was expecting more commentary on the individual pieces. Do you plan to include your general feelings about each of the songs, or will it basically be just a catalog?

So you already graduated and are working on your masters? Unless your occupation is out of date and you already earned your Master’s. In which case, congratulations. If not, keep on rockin’ and go for broke dood!
A pleasure to make your acquaintance ma’am…at least I think you’re female.

Yes, I’ve already received my undergraduate degree, and am currently working on my Master’s. I don’t think my desired occupation will ever go out of date, no matter where I live, thankfully. And you’re right, I am female 🙂 Thanks for dropping by!

Ah, so you’re still striving to get your master’s. Awesome. I bet you’re almost done. How envious for I still have a year (or 2) to go. Well, gambatte dood.

Teaching is a cool and rewarding prospect, keeps you young in mind… then again writing stuff is pretty enjoyable as well.

Why thank you! I do enjoy teaching, though I’ve sort of plateaued on my academic writing as of late. Blog writing does help in keeping me somewhat warmed up, but feels like much less of a chore than the thesis writing that I should be doing.
