Kaiseki Anime Podcast – Episode 005

It’s all about the shows with both style and substance this week, including Megalo Box, Steins;Gate 0, and Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan. Their unique art styles caught my attention at the beginning, then their settings and stories guaranteed my affections for the rest of the spring season. What are your thoughts on these anime?

  1. A couple things on HisoMaso: They have multiple pilots for redundancy. What if the ETF needed to fly and they only had one pilot and she was sick or injured? Plus, later in the show they will have more dragons, because the OP gives that away.

I thought it was what Marina had said about the dragons nature being to devour the people. I’m pretty sure that if Masotan wanted to fly by himself, he could just fly, although it would be kind of a mess until he got more used to it, like in the first episode. So he’s going along with the humans even though it’s not what he would naturally do (although at this point is it really unnatural, or is it just his current behavior?)

    • HisoMaso’s second episode helped clear up my confusion about why the second pilot was kept around: backup, and security. We recorded this podcast after only seeing the one episode, so I don’t think we had seen the opening yet which revealed the other pilots and dragons. If they were in the ending, I must have not noticed! But now I’m excited to meet them all.

I do wonder how old Masotan really is, if he’s ancient and just prefers having a pilot now, or if he’s a descendent who’s known nothing but captivity. I’m only up to episode two, so if episode three answers this, let me know!

  2. Why does the dragon look so familiar? I feel like I’ve seen another blue and round cartoony dragon before. Maybe it’s the Pokemon-like design? It’s gonna bug me.

    • I haven’t really watched Pokémon, but Masotan does kind of look like a Dratini, doesn’t he? Let me know if you ever find out what other dragons he reminds you of!
